Ree Botts is a poet, scholar, and activist from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Ree is currently pursuing a PhD of African Diaspora studies at the University of California, Berkeley. She received her MA of African American Studies and Anthropology at the University of California, Los Angeles, where she also taught Black Intellectual Thought. During her undergraduate trajectory as a Sociology and Anthropology major at Spelman College, she was inspired to study Black women's perceptions of self and its impact on their identity. She began intertwining her own journey of self discovery with her studies which is illuminated through the rich depth of her work both within and outside the academy. Ree also has incorporated her global travel to Ghana, South Africa, and The Bahamas into her scholastic research, her poetic writing, and her motivational healing sessions. In 2015, Botts was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society for her outstanding academic success. She has also been recognized for her overall achievement as a UNCF Mellon Mays Fellow, a Women of Excellence Leadership scholar, a member of the Eta Kappa Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, the Miss Morehouse College 2014 - 2015, and Ebony Magazine's Top 10 HBCU Queens. Botts was featured in the 23 & Graduated miniseries which aired nationally on television stations from CBS to NBC. She is the proud founder of The Selfology Movement which inspires Black women to become self enlightened through a soul searching process of internal revelation. The Selfology model has been adopted on campuses across the nation, from Kentucky State University, where Botts was featured as the Women’s History Month Convocation Speaker, to Alabama State University where Botts was a guest speaker for the When She Became Her Conference. Botts has also spoken on self love and healing at the NAACP National Convention in Baltimore, Maryland, UCLA’s Black Graduation, and Houston Texas’ Project Row Houses, and hosted Selfology workshops at schools such as Emory University, Clark Atlanta University, Spelman College, and Morgan State University. She is currently writing her first poetry book, entitled “ree-centered : a poetic collection of selfology” which was inspired by her own selfology journey.
